Toyota will show off the new FT-86 'Toyobaru' – its new joint project with Subaru to build an affordable, rear-wheel drive sports coupé. The FT-86 will form the centrespiece of the 2009 Tokyo motor show later this month.Although dubbed a concept car, CAR understands the new Toyota FT-86 is in fact a near-production ready model that will launch Toyota back into the sports coupé market to battle the VW Scirocco and Honda CRZ. It's pretty compact at just 4160mm long and 1760mm wide, making it smaller than a TT or Scirocco.
After the passing of William Clay Ford Sr., Ford has announced that they will honor his memory and his contribution to the automobile with the creation of scholarships for automotive design students. William Clay Ford Sr., the last grandson of Henry Ford, died last week at the age of 88. Ford worked at the company that bears his name for 57 years, serving as chairman of the design committee for 32 of those years.

Mazda is playing their best card at the New York Auto Show – the evergreen MX-5 – with a special edition to celebrate its 25th birthday – the Mazda MX-5 25th Anniversary Edition – and a preview of the chassis for the all-new MX-5. The 25th Anniversary Edition of the MX-5 is based on the 2.0 litre Roadster Coupe with the 158bhp engine and can be had with either a manual or automatic gearbox, but just one colour – Soul Red Metallic. Titivations include a black roof, door mirrors and A-Pillars, 17″ Dark Gunmetal alloys, Bilstein dampers, Piano Black trim and off-white leather seats with ’25th Anniversary’ logos embossed on the seats.
